Commercial Refurbishment | The Strover Center at Acorn Village, Mistley, Essex

Acorn Village is a care home for people living with disabilities. The work they do involves training and up-skilling people vocational rehab skills to enable residents the freedom to live on their own.

HMJ Contracts were approached to tender, having been recommended us by another contractor they had worked with. We came in from tender stage and took this project from the building control stage, through to construction, sign-off and handover.

Acorn Village had funding to turn an outside barn into a purpose-built, adaptable workshop for teaching cooking, cleaning and housekeeping skills - also known as the Strover centre. This required making a space that was adaptable and accessible for varying disabilities including wheelchair usage, down syndrome and dwarfism.

It was important that the kitchen had adjustable worktops that could be raised and lowered to suit the residents using the space to learn cooking and cleaning. The bathroom was designed to accommodate an H-track hoist. Overall the project entailed a kitchen, bedroom, two bathrooms and a multi-use lobby.

We're really pleased with the outcome of the project and the feedback we received from our client

"HMJ contracts were recommended to us and we are so glad that we have made this connection. Their work is completed to a great standard and they were so accommodating with slight alterations that come up. Nothing was too much trouble and the team worked hard to bring this project in on budget. We were so pleased we even requested they came back to do some regular maintenance work for us while we were down on manpower. Highly recommended"
